The Bakersfield Museum of Art is the perfect location for this stripped down, raw look at one of the most complicated of relationships – that of grandmother, mother and daughter. This funny, surprising and moving piece jumps through time and space as each character wrestles with the past and what the future holds.

Dorthea, Echo’s grandmother, is a notable eccentric who pushes her granddaughter to learn Latin and Greek as a baby and calculus by age nine. Dorthea also pushes her daughter Artie to the brink of mental collapse. Echo is the youngest and the heart of the play. Determined to win the spelling bee and change her family’s destructive path, she is relentless in pursuing her mother’s love, and ultimately inspiring all of us to love better, give more and be eleemosynary – charitable, the giving of alms.

Playwright Lee Blessing presents fragmented vignettes of the lives of the three women as they struggle to define themselves both as individuals and as part of a family unit. In this poignant and mature study of familial relationships, Blessing highlights the human need for connection and forgiveness.
